COLOR – an experience, inner and outer experience!

One of my many color wheels

What is a Color Wheel?

Isaac Newton devised the color wheel in 1666, mapping the color spectrum onto a circle to show the relationship between colors.

Color is not inherent in objects, according to Newton. Rather, an object's surface reflects some hues while absorbing all others. Only the reflected hues are visible to us.

How does one transform the reflected wavelength off an item as a color using physical pigments into the language of painting?

"The Color Algorithms"
The term I use to refer to my Color Wheels!

  • To begin my painting process, I employ a left-brain analytical approach by selecting pigments.

  • Each painting undergoes a unique color curation that encompasses the entire spectrum.

  • I use a scientific, analytical, and calculative algorithmic technique to tackle the intricate problem of color.

  • My Color Study functions as a logical processor with an input and output.

The Output.

  • After my color processor works its magic, I get a chart displaying all the enchanting hues and relationships 🪄

  • It's like a magic potion recipe, but for colors! 🌈

  • Then comes the best part, where I use this knowledge to create a masterpiece on the canvas 🎨

  • Time to put my painting hat on! 🎩

The Input.

  • My color processor eagerly devours the primary and secondary pigments from the tube 💙💛❤️

  • Then, I play mad scientist to create medium and light shades by mixing 2-3 variants with Titanium white

  • It's a wild ride, but the end result is always a masterpiece! 😎

Experience the Evolution

“All masterpieces were once only pigments on a palette” - Henry S. Haskins

“Keep Your Sunny Side Up!”

  • Ok, I am thrilled to talk about this example of my sunflowers!

  • With yellow as the star of the show, I meticulously selected a palette of contrasting hues that accentuated the vibrancy of the sunflowers.

  • Mixing the pigments with their complementaries on my trusty glass palette was so much fun!

  • Then, the real magic happened when I plotted them on my color algorithm, aka wheel.

  • And voila! With my paintbrush, I was able to bring my masterpiece to life.

“A Touch of Gold”

  • Do I have a treat for you! Feast your eyes on this incredible example of a curated color rainbow palette, with the daffodils taking center stage.

  • This time, the yellow hue is the star of my colorful show.

  • I've arranged the yellow in three places on the canvas, with three beautiful vases.

  • And as for the supporting cast, all the hues are complementary and supplementary to the daffodils.

  • Sometimes they flow along the rainbow from yellow to orange and into red.

  • Other times, they contrast strikingly with purples, lavenders, and blues.

  • Once I've mapped out my color mixes on my trusty color wheel algorithm, it's time for me to work my wizardry with a brush instead of a wand.

  • The evolution of the painting speaks for itself, so take a look and be amazed!
